This battle took place around 418 B.C between Sparta and it's allies on one side and Athens led by Argos on the other side. The only reason they went to war was because Sparta wanted to liberate Greece but it didn't quite work when the Spartans gave up first and 292 Spartans surrendered to Sphacteria. A few years later Athens wanted a new alliance with the democratic states on the Peloponnese. Sparta attacks the allies and tells them to make up their mind and choose either Sparta or the democratic states. The allies chooses the democratic states and Sparta goes into war in Mantinea with them and defeats all of them.
Warfare is a fascinating subject. Despite the dubious morality of using violence to achieve personal or political aims. It remains that conflict has been used to do just that throughout recorded history.
